There are a variety of simple, easy ways to clean fabric shades and drapes. Because they come in so many colours, patterns and styles, fabric window treatments all have different and unique methods of cleaning. The expansive Hunter Douglas collection we offer is what makes it so fun to create your own, custom look. While some fabrics require simple, at-home care, other fabrics that are embroidered, embellished or lined with other fabrics require special care and sometimes pro cleaning.

While there might be some budget-friendly cleaning services that can help you, it always pays to learn how to do it yourself, just in case.

Drapes

First and foremost, the most important factor to making sure dust, dirt and other kinds of buildup don’t accumulate on your drapes is regular maintenance. This ensures that your fabric always looks clean and fresh regardless of traffic, indoor environment or other circumstances like children and pets.

  • Dust or vacuum the drapes on both sides
  • Place special attention on areas that have pleats or creases as they have a tendency to collect more dust than other areas.
  • Pay attention to cornices, valances and cascades.
  • Monthly, check the drapes and other elements for loose strings, broken loops or ropes, or any areas that need repair. You might notice more damage towards the bottom of the drapes if you have children and pets.
  • If you notice any stains, make sure to immediately spot clean with an appropriate and safe detergent or stain dissolver. be careful not to use detergents that are too strong, as they can fade or even bleach the colour.

Honeycomb Shades

Honeycomb shades are slightly finicky to clean but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite easy.

  • Use a feather duster or gently vacuum the fabric once a week or as often as you think is necessary.
  • Notice that dust has settled inside the hard-to-reach cells? Use a blowdryer to gently blow out the dust. But careful – use the cool setting and never use the hottest heat setting to avoid doing any damage to the fabric.
  • If you notice any areas are soiled, dirty or stained, you can use some warm soapy water to gently clean them with a cloth or soft sponge.
  • If you are cleaning blackout fabrics, it’s important to make sure you are taking extra care in the process as permanent damage or creasing can happen.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are incredibly easy to care for as their fabric doesn’t hold much risk for damage.

  • Gently use a feather duster to dust or gently vacuum clean
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe clean
  • Do not machine wash or submerge in water

Solar Shades

Solar shades are very often used outdoors as they provide ample protection from the sunlight. This increases the chances of dust, dirt and grime accumulating on them much quicker.

  • Gently use a feather duster to dust or gently vacuum clean
  • Use a damp cloth to wipe clean
  • Do not machine wash or submerge in water
  • If soiled, use a damp cloth with mild soap to gently wipe clean and allow to dry completely before drawing the solar shade back up to avoid mould growth.
